THERMAL TRANSFER LABEL AND BARCODE PRINTERS
Thermal transfer printer prints on paper, foil and textile labels by transferring ink from the thermal transfer ribbon. This method contrasts with direct thermal method where no ribbon is present in the process, and the basic advantage of the thermal transfer method is the long life of labels printed.
Thermal transfer printers print with thermal transfer head, that presses the paper or foil label onto a driven rubber roller. Between the print head and the label a very thin thermal transfer ribbon is placed, which is a polyester film. On the label side the ribbon is coated with a wax, wax-resin or resin “ink”. As the label and the ribbon are driven beneath the print head together, thermal elements of the print head are heated, melt the “ink” off the polyester film and transfer it onto the label. This process happens very quickly and accounts for the fast speed of the printers and the image is dried instantly.
Thanks to the high quality of the image printed, thermal transfer printers are designed especially for printing barcode labels.
They are also used for printing clothing labels, labels with serial numbers and other variable information; printing foil labels – as most foils will melt in a laser printer.
